Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are usually performed by our Registered Dental Hygienists. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:

Removal of calculus (tartar)
|
Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth and/or root surface. Calculus it could be form above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.

| Removal of plaque |
Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums and starts decay. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!

| Teeth polishing: |
Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during regular tooth brushing and the use of dental floss.

| Buccal -Dental Examination: |
The examination involves checking each tooth for possible decay, cracks and old fillings that could be leaking. Also soft tissues are check as palate (roof of the mouth), cheeks, lips, gums, floor of the mouth and tongue.
Oral cancer might be detected at the tongue, floor of the mouth and soft palate tissues, in back of the tongue, lips and gums being less frequent. Dr. Montes de Oca will check all these places looking for lumps or irregular tissue changes.
When a cancerous lesion is detected at an early stage could be removed and the disease controlled.

| Digital x-rays: |
Digital radiographs are a technological advancement that results in less exposure to radiation for our patients and an almost instantaneous picture for Dr. Montes de Oca.
Unlike traditional, film-based x-rays, digital x-rays often show more detail and can be archived in our system for future reference and comparison.
With these x-rays we are able to check for cavities or decay between the teeth, possible abscess or infections in the bone or inside teeth.
